Dr. John D. Bower
Dr. John D. Bower's groundbreaking work on renal disease led to the opening of the state's first dialysis unit here at UMMC in 1966. He also worked to make dialysis affordable, accessible, and cost-effective for patients across the state.
The John D. Bower School of Population Health established with his generous support in 2017, focuses on health outcomes of entire populations rather than individual patents. Researchers here study the social, environmental, cultural, and physical factors that affect health and the delivery of health care. With a better understanding of population-level issues, these scientists can create large-scale interventions to improve a community's overall health.
Dr. Bower would also offer his office spaces for evening meetings of local civil rights leaders.
